When a Secret Plan Comes Together Perfectly

There are proposals, and then there are the ones that take your breath away, not just because of the moment itself, but because of everything that quietly happened behind the scenes to make it real. Matt and Amber's surprise proposal on Ocean Drive in Newport, Rhode Island was exactly that kind of moment. And I have been waiting to share this story ever since!
If you are dreaming of a surprise proposal photographer in Newport, Rhode Island, or anywhere along the stunning coastline of New England, I hope this post gives you a real, honest, behind-the-scenes look at what that experience can look like... and why the details matter so much.
Newport, Rhode Island: A Place That Already Meant Everything
Before I even get into the logistics of the day, I want to talk about why Newport was so special for this couple. For the last three years that they have been together, they have taken a yearly trip to Newport, Rhode Island because they absolutely love it there. It is one of those destinations that becomes woven into a relationship... the restaurants you always go back to, the drives you take without a plan, the way the salt air feels like it belongs to you. Matt knew, without a doubt, that this was where he wanted to propose.
Ocean Drive, with its rugged coastline and never ending rocky cliffs overlooking the Atlantic, is one of the most breathtaking stretches in Newport. There are so many quiet sections to look out at the ocean. No busy waterfront buzz. Just open sky, crashing waves, and the kind of setting that makes every single photograph feel like it belongs in a magazine. It was the perfect backdrop for one of the most important moments of their lives.
Over a Month of Secret Planning (Yes, We Even Met in Advance)
Matt reached out to me well over a month before the proposal. Reaching out far in advance is genuinely so helpful when it comes to planning a surprise like this, and I always encourage couples to reach out as early as possible, especially when they have a specific location and timing in mind.
Matt and I actually met at the location in secret ahead of time. We walked the area together, talked through exactly where he would take Amber, where I would be positioned, and how the timing of the moment would unfold. We mapped out the hiding spots, and we planned for everything we could anticipate.
This is something I genuinely love doing for my couples. When you invest in a luxury proposal photography experience, you deserve more than a photographer showing up and hoping for the best. You deserve someone who has already walked those rocks, who knows exactly where the light hits, and who has thought through every possible variable so that on the day of, the only thing you have to worry about is getting down on one knee.
Weather, Flexibility, and Chasing the Right Light
If you have spent any time in New England, you know that May weather is completely unpredictable. (the weather all year round for that matter is) And this day was no exception. The morning of the proposal, the forecast was looking hazy, not exactly what you picture for coastal landscape.
But this is exactly why communication and flexibility are everything in photographing a surprise proposal. Matt and I stayed in close contact throughout the day, keeping an eye on the sky and the light together. We adjusted our timing to catch the best possible conditions, and it paid off beautifully. The haze actually softened the light in the most dreamy, romantic way, giving the images this ethereal, coastal quality that I am absolutely obsessed with.
One of the tools I swear by for proposal days is location sharing. On the day of, I always have the proposer share their location with me on their phone. That way, I can track exactly where they are without a string of obvious texts flying back and forth. No "are you close?" messages. No risk of Amber glancing over and seeing something suspicious on Matt's screen. Just seamless, silent coordination.
I also ask that the proposer send me a photo of them together earlier in the day so I know exactly what they are wearing. This helps me spot them from a distance and makes sure I am ready from the second they step out of the car.
The Moment I Live For: Hiding in My Car on the Rocky Coast
I arrived at Ocean Drive about 30 minutes before Matt and Amber. This is something I do for every surprise proposal, early arrival is a non-negotiable. I walked the area, confirmed the coast was clear, checked that there were no other visitors nearby since Matt and Amber had specifically requested as much privacy as possible, and then I pulled out the camera gear I planned to use and pre-set all of my settings. When the moment comes, I need to be ready in seconds. There is no time to adjust exposure or switch lenses mid-proposal.
Once I was set, I got back in my car and waited. Hidden in the back seat, camera in hand, and darting my eyes back in forth from watching the location on my phone and the entrance to the spot.
Amber thought they were heading to lunch at Castle Hill Inn — which, for the record, they absolutely were. That reservation was real. But first, Matt told her he wanted to drive around Newport a little, especially along Ocean Drive.
When I saw a car pull into the secluded rocky coastal area, everything kicked into gear. I set up my little on-camera tripod and hit record on my iPhone so they would have a video of the proposal the moment it happened, something they could watch back together that same night. Then I quietly got out of the car and followed them out toward the rocks, staying about 20 to 30 feet back, moving slowly, using a nearby bush for cover.
Matt led Amber all the way out to the rocks overlooking the ocean. And then he got down on one knee
Giving Them Space to Actually Live the Moment
The second he proposed, I stepped out from behind the bush and started capturing everything... her reaction, his face, the way they held each other. But here is something I feel really strongly about as a proposal photographer: this moment belongs to them, not to me.
I kept my distance, I let the emotion breathe, and I did not rush in for a handshake or shout directions. I just photographed quietly from where I was, letting them have their private moment on those rocks with the ocean behind them and the whole world feeling very far away.
I always wait until the couple finally notices me, when they both look up and give me that slightly dazed look of "wait, what do we do now?" That is my cue! That is when I finally walk over, introduce myself, and in this case, got to give Amber the biggest hug.

Engagement Photos on the Rocky Coastal Cliffs of Newport

After giving them a few minutes alone to just be together and call family, to cry, to laugh, to do all the things you do in those first minutes of being engaged, I went back to my car to swap out my lens for the engagement portraits to follow.
We spent the next stretch of time climbing over rocks, laughing in the ocean breeze, and making photographs that feel as alive as that day actually was. From the light, the setting, and the outfits, everything came together in the most stunning way.
Matt and Amber wore the most perfectly curated coastal outfits. Effortlessly put together, totally them, and absolutely ideal for the rocky, textured landscape of Ocean Drive. The colors, the textures, the way everything photographed against the Atlantic, it was genuinely one of my favorite sessions to date.
And Now They Are Getting Married
A few months after their engagement session, Matt and Amber reached back out.
They wanted me to photograph their wedding!
I cannot even begin to tell you how much that means. Being chosen to photograph a couple's proposal, watching the beginning of their engagement story, and then being invited to document their wedding day... that is the full circle I dream about as a photographer.
This summer, I will be photographing their wedding at Sapphire Estate in Sharon, Massachusetts. I am counting down the days! Matt and Amber: thank you for letting me be part of your story from the very beginning. I cannot wait for what comes next.
